All Gerbils Go To Heaven

I feel obliged to notify you that Gerbilee passed away on Sunday night. CC was getting ready to go to bed and was feeding each gerbil its semi-nightly meal worm (yum) when she noticed that Gerbilee was motionless at the bottom of her cage, rather than eagerly awaiting the prized meal worm. Gerbilee’s sister, Gerbilann, who resides in the adjoining cage, seemed entirely heedless of this development and simply wanted her worm.

It is not my intention to make light of this situation; I guess I’m not quite sure how to feel about it. I am sad for CC, who raised these two since they were babies and was very much upset by last night’s discovery. I certainly got more than a little emotional at the passing of our cats Tick-Tock and Brownie a couple years ago, so I am not one of those people who scoffs at emotional attachments to non-human friends. Still, I never established much of an emotional tie to the gerbils, so my emotions towards them are somewhat indirect, looking through CC’s eyes. But since I have spoken of the gerbils on various occasions in this journal, I thought I should mark Gerbilee’s passing.
