I decided to take the bus home rather than the train. At some point, two strangers, a man and a woman, began chatting about area restaurants. I wasn’t particularly following their discussion until they reached this point. I will report their exchange as nearly verbatim as I can remember it.
She: So many restaurants are opening and closing, it’s hard to keep track of them all!
He: That place on Grand that was a diner is a Turkish place now.
She: What are you saying?
He [somewhat bewildered]: I’m saying it’s a Turkish restaurant now.
She [her voice becoming more agitated]: No – What are you saying?
He [really bewildered]: What do you mean?
She [even more agitated]: WHAT ARE YOU SAYING? What do you mean when you say ‘Turkish’? I know what you’re saying – you think I don’t?
He had no response, and he exited at the next stop. A few different interpretations of this exchange come to mind, but I will simply leave it be with no additional comment, other than “Notes to self – A) look for new Turkish place on Grand; and B) think twice before discussing new restaurants with strangers on the #22 bus.”
