Look Who Rolled Into Town!

This is probably of more interest to my friends from Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding – Mildred’s in town! The long-time Grandma Nunzio from the show retired and moved back to her native Massachusetts in June of last year (specifically, the town of Lynn for you geography buffs). Her daughter decided to treat her to a trip to Chicago so she could visit old friends, and I’m proud to report that I made the cut and received a phone call from her the other day. We had a lovely brunch this morning and she let me know that she’s doing well. She asked me to pass along her best wishes to all the folks she won’t be able to see during this brief visit. She also mentioned that she’s still performing – she’s with a singing group at her local senior center that travels to old folks’ homes singing old-time songs, and she loves seeing the people’s faces light up when they recognize an old song they haven’t heard in decades.

I didn’t tell Millie this, but I had to smile at how much more pronounced her Boston accent has become now that she’s living back there. It’s always been there, though one would probably not have heard it in her Grandma Nunzio through the thick Italian accent she utilized. The café at which we met today wasn’t on Clark when she would say it – it was on “Clahk.” I suppose I should have pointed out to her that if it’s Saturday, I’m not on the clock. But I didn’t.

Mildred goes back East tomorrow, but she expects to be back here visiting again before the year is over. It was an unexpected treat to see her and a great way to kick off the weekend!
