I want to pass along word that has recently reached me of the passing of Dr. Joseph French. There are various people who read this journal on occasion who have worked with Dr. French who might not otherwise hear the news, so I wanted to do my part to spread the word.

Dr. French was for many years the Artistic Director of the Greenfield Village Players in Dearborn, Michigan. I myself was directed by him in a couple of productions and appeared onstage with him in several others, including a memorable production of The Time of Your Life by William Saroyan. A photo from that production appears below. Dr. French is on the right in the role of Joe (yes, that’s a toupee on his head). I’m in the center as Tom (during the skinniest year of my adult life), and Irene Hublick (nee Schweyer) is on the left as Kitty. Irene was indisputably Dr. French’s favorite leading lady. She played dozens of leading roles there over the years. For that matter, I can scarcely count the shows I did with Irene myself, not only at the Village, but at various other theaters.

Dr. French was one of the most well known individuals in the Detroit theater community. He was responsible for giving me some wonderful and unique opportunities as both an actor and a playwright. I could tell some very entertaining stories about Joe, but I will let those go for another time. For now, I will simply offer my condolences to anyone saddened by this news.

Dr. Joe French

Thanks for posting this Chuck. I did two plays with Dr. French and also worked on his staff for one summer at the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village. Excellent memories!
