Enjoy your VD

I don’t think I’m quite as cynical as that title and picture suggest. You just have to understand my variable attitude towards Valentine’s Day – if I have a sweetie, I’m all over it, and I’ll do what I can to imbue the day with some sweetness, romance, and all that good stuff. If, as usual, I don’t have a sweetie, I tend more toward hip detachment, explaining to anyone who will listen that it’s just a crass, Hallmark-generated holiday. OK, so it’s not the most intellectually honest way to handle the situation, but it has its benefits. In that spirit, I offer the following thoughts for the occasion:

My friend FP often cites this quote from Ted Danson on the TV series Becker: “The only man who knew how to celebrate Valentine’s Day was Al Capone!”

I looked to see what famous people were born on Feb. 14. There are a few worth noting. If by chance Jimmy Hoffa is still alive, he’ll be celebrating his 92nd birthday. If Vic Morrow had been able to keep his head when all those about him were losing theirs, he’d be turning 73. And if Jack Benny were still alive, he’d be turning 39.

Continuing with this birthday theme, the day before or the day after would be much better days to mark as holidays – MUCH cooler birthdays! Check it out – Feb. 13: Peter Gabriel, Chuck Yeager, Grant Wood, and Bess Truman. Feb. 15: Matt Groening, John Barrymore, Susan B. Anthony, and Galileo! Oh yeah, one more for Feb. 14: Florence Henderson. I rest my case.

Whoa, dude! You’re going all background graphic on me!

Yeah, I’ve been trying to think of something to use in the background. Today, I thought of this picture. I snapped this from the deck of a tour boat as we were coming into the dock on Lake Geneva in Wisconsin. I was there for an off-site event with my day job. We were staying at the Grand Geneva Resort. It was nice. Real nice. And this is one of my very favorite photos that I’ve ever taken, so it’s quite appropriate to use it here. The version you’re looking at has been cropped a little, grayed out a little, and gently texturized in Photoshop. The original was just too bright to live comfortably in the background. If you’d like to see the original, I’ve LJ-cut it, so you can click below to see it.
