Confirmation Bias

If you click here, you’ll be taken to an article on the Los Angeles Times website that I heartily commend to your attention. It is a nice distillation of a lot of things I’ve thought – and more, written by Michael Shermer, one of my favorite contemporary journalists. It begins by examining the mindsets that went into making the Jonestown massacre possible, then goes on to look at the more general implications of what is known as “confirmation bias.” A few weeks ago, we marked the 30th anniversary of the end of Jonestown, and there is still much to be learned and utilized from contemplating what went into it.
