New Phone

Way back in 2002, I was cast in a little show called Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding. It was an open-ended commitment and I wound up staying for over 5 years. Upon being cast, I immediately realized that there would inevitably be nights when I would be on a train or bus that was broken down, or some other unforeseen circumstance would make me late for my call time, and I would need to have some way of calling the theater and letting them know what was happening. I therefore decided that it was time for me to get my first cell phone.

I selected a modest, no-frills Nokia. You can see it to the left. Yes, it looks pretty beat up – Nokia nameplate long gone, numbers wearing off the buttons, scratches galore. That’s because I never lost it and it never broke, even after 8 years. Heck, I never even had to replace the battery! I should probably contact Nokia and offer a testimonial to them.

Well, the phone still works fine, but I’ve gotten to a point where I want more. Eight years ago, I didn’t have a blog; I wasn’t on Facebook or Twitter; I didn’t send text messages. I worked on a computer pretty much every day, but I wasn’t truly Plugged In. And the best cell phones in 2002 couldn’t do half of what they can do now.

So I’m going for it. In a week or so, I will be the owner of a shiny iPhone, and I do believe I’m going to be having a lot of fun with it. And probably spending more time and money on it than wisdom might deem appropriate. Judge me if you must. You can text me your judgments if you like. Better yet, get a hold of an iPhone yourself and call me so we can be looking at each other while you deliver your judgments.
