A respectful nod today in the direction (and for the direction) of Robert Wise, who died yesterday at the age of 91. He first came to prominence with an Oscar nomination for film editing for Citizen Kane. As a director, his work included such classics as The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Haunting, West Side Story, and The Sound of Music. I even forgave him the bloated excesses and somnambulant pacing of one of his last directorial efforts, Star Trek: The Motion Picture. All lovers of the cinema should bow their heads for a moment today.
