Getting to Second Base

As I write this, the Detroit Tigers are halfway to the American League pennant. They hold a 2 games to none lead over the Oakland Athletics in their best-4-out-of-7 series, with game 3 about 15 hours away.

I want to highlight some information I received in a reply to my Tigers posting of a few days ago. The reply was signed “Mrs Sabr,” which may not mean much to you at first blush. If I tell you that SABR stands for Society for American Baseball Research and you know anything about my family, you should be able to quickly identify our mystery woman. But I will respect her right to be cryptic and leave her unnamed in this space.

Mrs Sabr passed along this link: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/gadfly901 If you go there and click one of the buttons for audio on the left side, you can hear Ernie Harwell doing the radio play-by-play from Detroit’s pennant-clinching game in 1968*, followed by “Go Get ’Em, Tigers,” a song that takes me back to my childhood. It was heard a great deal on Detroit radio during that magical season.

The baseball magic has been sadly missing from Detroit for most of the last two decades, but it’s back this year, so I want to share this classic tune with a wider audience. For those of you whose computers can’t handle that sort of audio, I’m also passing along the lyrics. They don’t match the sly wit of Cole Porter or the cleverness of Tom Lehrer, but they make up for it with their purity of spirit:

We’re all behind our baseball team,
Go get ’em, Tigers!
World Series bound and picking up steam,
Go get ’em, Tigers!

There’ll be joy in Tiger Town, we’ll sing you songs
When the Bengals bring the pennant home, where it belongs.

We’re all behind our baseball team,
Go get ’em, Detroit Tigers,
Go get ’em, Tigers!

* If you want to get technical, the Tigers had actually clinched the pennant some minutes earlier when the Baltimore Orioles lost their game that night, but the Tiger Stadium scoreboard operator didn’t post the final of that game until after the Tigers had won.

World Series Bound

Hi Chuck !
As of this writing the Tigers are on their way to the World Series ! It was nice to see Magglio Ordonez clinch the series vs Oakland. He wept last year when the White Sox won the championship. He,along with Frank Thomas, were integral parts of what became Chicago's latest champion ! Frank is going home but Magglio is sippin champagne !
As for the Tigers '68 theme song...You may remember that it came out as a part of the 1967 pennant race (which the Tigers lost to the Red Sox on the last day of the season). Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't it Detroit's famous Red Garter Band that supplied the music for the song ? And...was Ernie Harwell (a prolific song-writer) the composer ? Go Tigers !!!!!

Re: World Series Bound

Hmmm . . . I'm guessing that this message came from one of my brothers . . .

Yeah, I almost mentioned the Harwell songwriting credit, but I don't remember whether he wrote the whole thing himself or whether he co-wrote it with someone. And double-yeah, it certainly sounds like the Red Garter Band, but I don't recall if I ever heard that stated formally anywhere.

And triple-yeah, Go Tigers!!!!!
