I feel as if I may have been the last person in North America to see GQ, but just in case I’m mistaken and you haven’t seen it – in the words of Inigo Montoya, let me sum up: The cast of a TV science fiction drama (loosely modeled after Star Trek) is taken into outer space by real aliens who have been watching the broadcasts for years and have taken the shows to be historical documents rather than fictional dramas. The Commander, played by Tim Allen, is the aliens’ greatest hero and they believe he will deliver them in their hour of need. The band of jaded, mostly out-of-work actors is plunged into a real, life-and-death struggle in outer space.
One actor deserves to be singled out, especially as he could easily be lost in the glare of such well known actors as Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, and Tony Shaloub – Enrico Colantoni in the role of head alien Mathesar. He was very, very good – really a delightful comic turn. I had to go to imdb.com to find out his name, which at first meant nothing to me. But as I scanned through his credits, I realized that I’d actually seen him many times before. He was a regular on the sitcom Just Shoot Me, as the bald photographer Elliot. NEVER would have figured that one out! But going forward, he is someone I’m going to look for!
