I need my (outer) space!

Just got done watching Galaxy Quest on TBS. As a Trekkie from way back, I’d always wanted to see it but somehow never had until tonight. It was worth the wait! What fun! It was a pain in the aft deck watching it with commercial interruptions, but I dealt with it.

I feel as if I may have been the last person in North America to see GQ, but just in case I’m mistaken and you haven’t seen it – in the words of Inigo Montoya, let me sum up: The cast of a TV science fiction drama (loosely modeled after Star Trek) is taken into outer space by real aliens who have been watching the broadcasts for years and have taken the shows to be historical documents rather than fictional dramas. The Commander, played by Tim Allen, is the aliens’ greatest hero and they believe he will deliver them in their hour of need. The band of jaded, mostly out-of-work actors is plunged into a real, life-and-death struggle in outer space.

One actor deserves to be singled out, especially as he could easily be lost in the glare of such well known actors as Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, and Tony Shaloub – Enrico Colantoni in the role of head alien Mathesar. He was very, very good – really a delightful comic turn. I had to go to imdb.com to find out his name, which at first meant nothing to me. But as I scanned through his credits, I realized that I’d actually seen him many times before. He was a regular on the sitcom Just Shoot Me, as the bald photographer Elliot. NEVER would have figured that one out! But going forward, he is someone I’m going to look for!

GQ

I too thought GQ was great! It's one that I could see more than once. I thought it was a terrific venue for Tim Allen, but the supporting cast was perfect! Kudos for the casting in that one. Glad you shared!

Re: GQ

Yeah, and I thought it was almost sneaky the way they cast Sigourney Weaver -- I've never had a very high opinion of her as an actress, so it was perfect to have her playing the role of someone who's been stuck in a limited type-casting situation. Ms. Weaver, of course, has played a wide range of character types in her own career, far beyond what her acting ability should dictate. Go figure!

Ah, my family loves that movie. And oh my goodness - Mathesar is Keith Mars! (Yes, I watch Veronica Mars. Yes, I am somewhat ashamed of it.) I never would have figured that out if you hadn't inspired me to look him up on IMDb.

Veronica Mars is a show I've always heard interesting things about but have somehow managed to never see a second of.

Wow -- I managed to end both halves of that sentence with prepositions!

But there's no need for you to feel ashamed about watching it -- heck, you're talking to a straight guy who admits that he watches What Not to Wear. Just so you understand the standards for quality television in this neighborhood!
