Got Boredom?

Suppose your phone were to ring just now. You answer, and it’s a friend of yours. They begin the call by saying this: “Oh hi! I was just sitting here bored out of my mind. I’m not doing anything interesting, and I can’t think of anything interesting. So I thought I’d call you…”

How does it make you feel to know that this is the criteria for calling you? That your friend has to be in a near-stupor of boredom and at the end of their rope looking for something to stimulate their senses? I don’t know about you, but I’d rather they called me when they were doing or thinking something really interesting!

OK, I don’t think I’ve ever received a phone call like the one I just described – though I’m sure they occur. But I do see a LOT of online posts with subjects lines such as “I’m really bored,” “Because I’m bored,” and “Bored out of my mind.” I just want to say that I find it really hard to motivate myself to read any post with such a title. I can get bored all on my own without anybody else’s help, OK?

On the other side, if you’ve got something interesting to write about, don’t give it such a boring title!
